New Jakarta venue expected to boost MICE business

News this week: As part of the Indonesian government’s strategy to promote trade and business through MICE activities, a large new exhibition centre will be built in Jakarta. The new venue, the Jakarta International Exhibition and Convention Centre (JIECC), will be located in the centre of the city.

According to Indra Sukirno, executive director and chief executive of the Jakarta Convention and Exhibition Bureau, JIECC will be used for conventions, exhibitions, sports and entertainment events. The venue will cover a total area of 20 hectares, with a 60,000 m2 exhibition hall and a 6,000 m2 ballroom – which can be divided into three sections.

Construction of phase 1 of JIECC will begin later this month and is expected to be completed in October 2014. Phase 2 is scheduled to be finished in 2017.

When asked about the types of exhibitions to be held at JIECC, Sukirno stated, “We will organise business-to-consumer exhibitions, but we will switch to industry-specific events that focus, for example, on handicrafts, furniture, agriculture, car production, etc.”
