SNIEC reiterates stay in Pudong

News this week: The Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) has released a statement to reiterate its stay in Shanghai’s Pudong New Area following recent rumours about the possibility of the venue’s removal. Earlier in April this year, the venue quashed rumours that it would be closed and redeveloped in the Lingang port district.

Opened in November 2001, the venue is jointly owned by the German Exposition Corp., a joint subsidiary of Deutsche Messe, Messe Düsseldorf and Messe München, and Shanghai Lujiazui Exhibition Development Co., Ltd. SNIEC has recently signed long-term agreements with more than 70% of its customers including a 10-year agreement with the organiser of Furniture China, UBM Sinoexpo.

Key Shanghai venue appoints new GM

News this week: The Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) has announced the appointment of a new General Manager, Michael Kruppe, effective 1st February 2014.

Kruppe previously worked in sales and marketing in China in a variety of industries for almost 25 years. He replaces Dr. Hans-Jörg Geduhn, who left SNIEC at the end of January 2014 to pursue other challenges.

As Kruppe takes over from Geduhn, SNIEC faces a new era of heightened competition. A new 400,000 m2 venue is schedule to open in Shanghai’s Hongqiao district in 2015. The venue will be owned by the China Foreign Trade Group (organisers of the Canton Fair) and Shanghai EastBest International.

UBM assures Furniture China’s exhibitors of continuation at SNIEC

News this week: Earlier this week, UBM Sinoexpo, one of UBM Asia‘s joint venture companies in China and the organiser of Furniture China, released an open letter to its exhibitors addressing the possibility of a government-backed furniture trade show launching in Shanghai in 2015.

In the letter, the organiser addressed the issue of new competition stemming from the opening of the 400,000 m2 China Expo Complex in Hongqiao district in 2015. UBM acknowledged the benefits for China’s economy from a new furniture show, but stressed the benefits from exhibiting with the strong Furniture China brand outweighs short-term cost-savings.

The UBM letter also linked to a statement from Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) quashing rumours regarding the possible relocation of the SNIEC venue. SNIEC’s management explicitly denied that the venue would be closed and redeveloped in the Lingang port district. In addition, as BSG reported last week, SNIEC has recently announced it was securing long-term contracts with major exhibition organisers to continue to host their events at SNIEC.
