KLCC breaks ground on expansion project

News this week: Coinciding with the venue’s 10th anniversary, expansion work on Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) is officially underway. The expansion plans were first approved in February 2011.

The designated lot for expansion will comprise of mixed commercial use including an office tower, convention centre and retail podium. KLCC is located in the heart of the city’s business district. The extension will provide an additional 10,000 m2 of flexible indoor space in addition to KLCC’s existing 22,659 m2.

In 2014, a total of 1,759 events were held at the venue attracting more than 1.97 million delegates, an 11% increase over the 1,565 events recorded in 2013. The number of events increased from 1,565 in 2013, while delegates were up from the 1.96 million recorded in 2013.

KLCC’s general manager, Alan Pryor, commented at this year’s IMEX Frankfurt, “We are thrilled to reveal that groundwork began in late April and we expect the expansion to be completed in 2018. For many current clients the expansion will enable them to grow their activities and/or events significantly. This development will also play an important part in the future of the Centre and the events that it hosts, as such we are very happy that the announcement of the expansion coincides with our 10th anniversary.”

KLCC sets new record in 2014

News this week: The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) celebrated its 10th year in operation by setting a new record in 2014. During the year, a total of 1,759 events were held at the venue attracting more than 1.97 million delegates. The number of events increased from 1,565 in 2013, while delegates were up from the 1.96 million recorded in 2013.

According to KLCC, the Entertainment segment grew the most by 40%, followed by the TenOnCall segment’s 14% increase, the Banqueting & Functions segment and Exhibitions segment both rose by 9%. Since its opening in June 2005, KLCC has reportedly served more than 17.6 million visitors through the hosting of 9,969 events, and contributed RM 5.5 billion (US$1.5 billion) in economic impact towards the Malaysian economy.

KLCC’s 2014 Q4 expected to be strong

News this week: The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) will end 2014 on a high note. The venue reports that it will host a total of 21 medium- to large-sized events in October, November and December. These events will attract a total of 538,000 participants. Some of the larger events include: the PIKOM PC Fair, Malaysia International Jewellery Festival, Greentech & Eco Products Exhibition, International Baby Expo, Facon Education Fair and the HOMEDEC exhibition.

KLCC general manager, Alan Pryor, commented, “The loyalty afforded to us by our clients since opening has been second to none. We are grateful for their continuing support as returning clients attest to our continuing delivery of quality products and services with flexible, innovative and value-added solutions to meet their evolving needs.”

The venue opened in mid-2005, and since that time it has recorded a total of more than 16.8 million visitors to nearly 9,500 events with a reported economic impact of an estimated US$1.58 billion to the Malaysian economy.

KLCC hosts record number of events in 2013

News this week: The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) hosted 1,565 events in 2013, up 9% from 2012’s 1,442. This represents a new record for the venue.

According to KLCC, seven new exhibitions were held at KLCC covering a wide range of industries – rail, security, fire & security, skin care, glass manufacturing and baby products. In the same period, 33 conventions – all new to KLCC – were held at the venue. Of those, 29 were international conferences.

During the year, KLCC welcomed about two million visitors and they generated an economic impact of US$212 million to Malaysia, up from the 1.6 million visitors which generated an economic impact of US$179 million in 2012.

KLCC’s Peter Brokenshire retires, Pryor named as replacement

News this week: The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) has made two key changes to its managerial team following the announcement of Peter Brokenshire’s retirement - effective at the end of March 2014. Brokenshire led the venue over the 11-year period since its opening.


Alan Pryor has been promoted to general manager, taking over from Peter Brokenshire. Pryor joined KLCC in 2011 as deputy general manager with previous experience at the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC). In addition, Simon Lomas will be promoted to fill the role of deputy general manager. Lomas was previously with the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre.

KLCC hosted 1,119 events in 2012 year-to-date


News this week: The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) reported that the venue has hosted 1,119 events during the period from 1st January to 30th September 2012. That is up 13% from the 973 events held in the same period last year at KLCC.

During this period, KLCC received 1.2 million delegates and visitors, and reportedly generated an economic impact of around US$133 million to the city of Kuala Lumpur. According to KLCC, there are more than 25 major events scheduled to take place at the venue before the end of this year.

Over the seven and a half year period of KLCC’s operations, the venue reportedly hosted 6,322 events and attracted 13.2 million delegates. The venue also claims a US$1.3 billion economic impact since its inception in June 2005.

KLCC to revamp lighting

News this week: The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) has announced plans to invest more than US$650,000 to replace the lighting system in all five of its exhibition halls.

This refurbishment will see the lighting of the exhibition area switched to LED bulbs. Management of the venue estimates that the investment will result in a 28% drop in current lighting energy usage and should result in a savings of 800,000 kWh per year – or approximately US$82,000 per year.

KLCC features over 9,700 m2 of gross indoor exhibition space across five halls. The venue opened in mid-2005.
