Alibaba experiments with events in China

News this week: The Alibaba Group continues to experiment with face-to-face events. The Online Products Fair 2011 held in Xiamen last week was co-organised by the Xiamen Bureau of Commerce, the China Electronic Commerce Association and Alibaba.

The event lasted three days and was held at the Xiamen International Conference and Exhibition Centre. The event was designed to give small- and medium-sized enterprises (primarily selling on Alibaba’s Taobao platform) a chance to participate in an offline event. Alibaba reports that 37,000 individuals and SMEs in Xiamen operate online stores on Taobao and there are an additional two million registered Taobao buyers in Xiamen.

This year, the Ali Conference & Exhibition team is hosting similar events in Guangzhou, Hangzhou and Shanghai. These events are primarily targeting Taobao users. In recent years, however, Alibaba.com, the company’s B2B e-commerce platform, has also held small-scale face-to-face events including one in 2009 co-hosted with the Korean International Trade Association (KITA) in Seoul and an “Open Sesame” event in Sydney in July 2010.
